Ben Guest Assignment: Describe one of your favorite students.
My favorite student is the only student who manages to come into first period with a smile on her face every day. Standing at the door on morning duty, it's a breath of fresh air to see her coming down the hall. The other students come in too tired to say good morning, let alone upturn the corners of their mouths to resemble some sort of attempt to acknowledge my greeting, but she manages to do it, day in and day out.
She is also brighter than most of the other students, and unlike many of the others of her caliber who try to hide their intelligence, she proudly owns up to it, but never comes off as condescending. I admire her knack for understanding how the world works. Over the course of this year, I've had numerous discussions with her on why our school is run the way that it is run, and how sad it is that one section of the student body prevents the entire student population from having the privileges, such as not having to be walked to lunch by a teacher and access to lockers between class changes, that students at other schools take for granted.
She's expressed some interest in becoming a teacher, but is weary about coming back to our school, or a school in a similar situation. She's also toyed with the idea of teaching in the middle or the elementary school in our district. I've tried to offer all the encouragement that I can towards her pursuing her interest in being a teacher, but especially in possibly coming back to our district. Any school would be lucky to have someone with as much energy as she has on their staff, but our district could really, really use a teacher like her.
